Compuserve's Fiberarts Forum Weaving and Spinning, Braids and Bands Web Page
GO FIBERCRAFTS to find the spinners and weavers on CompuServe! On the message board, Section 18, you can always find lively discussions on looms and wheels, fiber types and spinning methods, wool festivals and weaving conferences, and just about any other fiber-related topic you can think of. In Section 17 you can talk to kumihimo braiders, card weavers, and other band makers. Plus it's a great place to go for moral support and advice when you're having a problem, as we have many experienced fiber artists onboard.
Fiber organizations online!
- You can chat with representatives of organizations such as Complex Weavers, Handweavers Guild of America, and Interweave Press. Many vendors, both large and small, have online contacts so they are easy to get in touch with. It's great to be able to read information about upcoming events and new products or publications and get quick answers to questions.
Library files!
- The Spin/Weave section has a library that's full of files which can be downloaded. You'll find everything from captures of fascinating message board discussions to pictures of things the members have made. The library is also the archive for tips for better spinning and weaving, tutorials, resource listings, and many other items of interest.
Conferencing!
- Join us on Friday nights at 9 PM eastern time for a live informal conference in the Skyweb room. This is where folks meet to chat about spinning, weaving, fiber, food, friends, and life in general. We have members who log on from all over the world to share their ideas and provide inspiration to each other. From time to time formal conferences are held - these are always announced in advance, and they give us the opportunity to get to know some members of the fiber community a little better.
Study groups and sample swaps!
- There are lots of group activities that the spinners and weavers are involved in. We've had spin swaps with themes, from Koolaid dyed mohair to pet fur to alpaca supplied by a designated shopper. There have also been weave swaps where swatches or finished items were exchanged. The past year has found us doing a Weave Study Group complete with text, homework, draft sharing in the library, and sample swaps - it's been so popular that more study groups have been organized, including an in-depth Sheep Breeds Swap and study group among the spinners.
- Current Study in Section 17, Bands and Braids is the Card Weaving Study Group. Led by Janis Saunders and using Candace Crockett's book Card Weaving as a text. If you would like to study along click here.
The Fibercrafts Forum is a place where folks with similar interests from all over the world can meet, exchange ideas, get tips, chat, and just plain have fun. We hope some of you will visit us to see what we're all about!
